Tot School–“Katy No-Pocket”

- Adam is 39 months old -

Last week we read the book “Katy No-Pocket” by Emmy Payne using Before Five in a Row as our guide.images

Unfortunately, we had a rough week.  Abby came down with the stomach flu on Monday, Adam on Thursday, and then both Nat and I on Saturday.  Not fun.  In between the sick days, we did some “school” but I never got a chance to buy a child’s size apron, sew pockets on, and have Adam put a bunch of his stuffed animals in (just like Katy does in the story).  I’m upset about missing out on making the story fun.  That should teach me to plan ahead and make sure everything is ready to go before the week starts.

One day we counted animals and tools in the illustrations and each day (well, each day we actually read), we went over the ASL signs for kangaroo, jump (hop), alligator (crocodile), monkey, lion, bird.  I want to try and make learning signs more of a priority.  Right now I use our Sign Babies flashcards and just go over them after we read the book, but he’s not retaining any of it.  My wheels have been turning on when/how to switch Adam to more of a preschool approach so maybe a “circle time” would be a good place to really work on signs?  Or maybe I should drop the signs and focus on Spanish vocab?  I’m not sure yet.

He really liked this activity.  It was like a puzzle but he got to glue as well!DSCF5949

K for Kangaroo coloring page.
If you look really closely, you can see a few colored pencil marks.  He’s really not into coloring and it concerns me a little.  Coloring is such a great fine motor activity and helps with writing later on but he just won’t do it!DSCF6014

I’ve been saving a “Kumon: Let’s Color!” workbook for a while and decided to bring it out.  He colored a bit more for this, but still not much.

I pulled out a file folder game I made and he counted the seeds and then matched it to the numeral.  He’s got his number down pat from 1-10!DSCF5910DSCF5913

He had a lot of fun with this one.DSCF6018

Just as I suspected, he is having a hard time letting his little sister do Tot School with Mommy.  He wants to be right there, “helping”!  We are working on him waiting patiently while I play with Abby for a bit, and then he can join in.  Here is is playing with our Fisher-Price Stack and Roll cups after Abby had lost interest.DSCF5931

I decided this was a really good Tot School activity for him as I helped him stack the cups in numerical order.  It was interesting to see that he struggles knowing what number comes next unless we count up to it from the beginning. Something to work on in the future I guess!DSCF5930

Between the baby being sick and Adam being sick we had a fun day at our local children’s museum with some friends!
Had I know he would be throwing up the next day, we would’ve have gone!
